2010 Aug. 31: WA Shelton: Letter to the editor: Biomass incinerators will foul our air

We should all be worried about the huge biomass incinerators that are coming soon to the Puget Sound basin.

We experience atmospheric inversions here every year. Smog banks obscure the Interstate 5 corridor, fireplace use is banned and people with breathing problems are advised to stay indoors.

These incinerators will operate 24-7/365 and further compromise our air quality — perhaps egregiously during these inversion events.

Simpson Timber Co. already has a permit to build a biomass incinerator near downtown Shelton.

That’s one.

Adage, a European company, will build on Port of Shelton property.

Number two.

The Evergreen State College has plans to convert from natural gas to biomass burning.

That’s three.

A company in Port Angeles also has plans for a huge incinerator …

On a winter day five years from now when the rain has finally stopped and you take your wall-climbing kids outside, and a caustic stench drives you back indoors to huddle around the air cleaner, take a few minutes and contact your elected representatives.
